IK Multimedia's Quad Image applies mid-side matrix processing across four independent frequency bands, enabling surgical control over stereo width at specific points in the spectrum. This is fundamentally different from broadband stereo processors: rather than widening or narrowing the entire stereo image uniformly, Quad Image lets you isolate and adjust M/S balance where it matters most.

The technical implementation centers on phase-coherent crossover filtering, which is critical when working with mid-side content. Poor filter design introduces phase artifacts that degrade mono compatibility and introduce unexpected tonal shifts. IK's filters here maintain integrity across band boundaries, preserving the relationship between center and side information without introducing audible discontinuities.

Practical applications range from corrective to creative.
