About this plugin
IK Multimedia's EQ 81 is a faithful emulation of a classic British console equalizer, paired with a discrete preamp circuit that distinguishes it from competing plugin versions. The plugin combines a four-band parametric design - high and low shelving filters alongside two peaking midrange bands - with high and low pass filters, providing both surgical precision and broad tonal shaping. The midrange sections engage a high-Q mode for narrower interventions, while the shelving bands can switch to peaking mode when more articulate frequency targeting is required.
What sets the EQ 81 apart from other emulations is its attention to the interaction between preamp and EQ sections. Rather than modeling the equalizer in isolation, IK Multimedia captured how the preamp circuit colors the signal before equalization occurs, resulting in a more organic and musically coherent response than typical plugin approximations.

The EQ 81 excels on sources where midrange definition matters most. Vocals, acoustic guitars, and electric instruments benefit from its extended parametric capabilities and musical frequency curves. However, the plugin proves equally capable on full mixes, drums, bass, and strings. The low shelving band adds presence and weight without inducing bloat - a hallmark of well-designed British console EQs.
The plugin serves experienced mixing engineers and mastering professionals seeking authentic analog warmth without coloration artifacts. It fills the gap between simple three-band shelving units and more clinical modern equalizers, offering the tonal character that defined classic recordings while maintaining the precision modern production demands.
