About this plugin
VSM IV is GForce Software's updated virtual string machine synthesiser, drawing from the circuitry and sound characteristics of 46 classic and rare machines spanning five decades. The plugin faithfully captures the warm, slightly compressed character of vintage string ensembles - from early solid-state units like the Eminent 310 and Freeman String Symphonizer through to beloved classics such as the Solina, Elka Rhapsody, and Korg PE2000.
The core strength lies in its two-layer architecture, which allows users to stack and blend disparate machines in ways the original hardware never permitted. This hybrid approach yields genuinely novel textures while maintaining the organic, analog-derived warmth that makes string machines sonically distinctive. The expanded sound library now exceeds 1900 presets, with comprehensive sampling capturing the tonal signature of each source instrument across its range.

VSM IV introduces meaningful workflow improvements alongside sonic enhancements. A redesigned patch browser substantially accelerates navigation through the extensive library. New features including Wow and Flutter emulation add authentic tape-like aging, while expanded polyaftertouch and velocity controls enhance real-time expressiveness. The revised filter section and additional effects - including matrix reverb and ensemble processing - provide practical tools for sculpting and contextualising sounds within a mix.
The plugin suits producers seeking authentic vintage string textures for orchestral arrangements, cinematic scoring, and downtempo electronic music. It's equally valuable for engineers needing controllable string pad foundations without the maintenance demands of hardware. Among current string machine emulations, VSM IV remains technically comprehensive and sonically convincing, though success depends on judicious layering and restraint rather than relying on presets alone.
