About this plugin
FabFilter Saturn 2 stands as one of the most comprehensively designed distortion and saturation processors available to modern producers. The plugin delivers across a spectrum of applications, from transparent mastering-grade warmth to aggressive harmonic destruction, with 28 distinct distortion models that credibly emulate tube circuitry, tape compression characteristics, transformer coloration, and amplifier behavior alongside experimental synthesis-oriented effects.
The multiband architecture - supporting up to six independent bands - proves particularly valuable for surgical tonal shaping. Each band operates with its own drive, tone, dynamics, and feedback controls, enabling producers to apply aggressive saturation to problem frequencies while preserving clarity elsewhere. The linear phase processing mode accommodates mastering workflows where phase coherence matters; standard mode prioritizes sonic character and CPU efficiency.

Where Saturn 2 distinguishes itself from competitors is its modulation implementation. The plugin's extensive XLFO, envelope generator, and envelope follower options can modulate virtually any parameter - crossover frequencies, band levels, tone shaping - with real-time visualization confirming exactly what the modulation produces. This depth transforms Saturn 2 from a static processor into a dynamic texture generator capable of subtle movement or dramatic evolution.
The interface reflects FabFilter's typical design philosophy: immediate visual feedback, drag-and-drop modulation routing, and resizable layouts. GPU acceleration ensures responsive performance even with complex multiband chains.
Saturn 2 appeals most to mix engineers seeking transparent saturation, producers designing electronic sounds requiring harmonic enrichment, and mastering specialists needing artifact-free warmth. Among comparable plugins, it represents one of the most flexible and technically capable solutions available.
