About this plugin
The Instant Phaser Mk II is Eventide's digital recreation of their landmark 1971 hardware unit, the effect that established the sonic template for studio flanging effects. The plugin models the original's all-pass filter network architecture, which creates subtle but musically rich phase cancellations across the frequency spectrum. This approach yields smoother, more cohesive modulation than many competing phasers, particularly in how the effect integrates with vocals and keyboards rather than sitting atop them.
The core appeal lies in its analog character. Rather than pursuing absolute accuracy, Eventide has introduced an "Age" parameter that simulates component drift and frequency misalignment in aging hardware. At 0% age, you get the precise, clean phasing of a factory-fresh unit. Incrementally pushing the knob introduces subtle detuning and harmonic complexity that tracks recorded on actual vintage gear possess. This is a legitimate creative tool, not mere nostalgia.

Three mode options control the depth of phase-shifting: Shallow maintains subtlety for sources requiring restraint, Deep intensifies the effect for pronounced vintage character, and Wide applies asymmetrical processing to stereo channels. The Wide mode proves particularly effective for widening thin synthesizer patches or transforming mono guitar recordings into dimensional stereo statements.
Suited primarily for mix engineers and producers seeking authentic 1970s tonality without seeking a museum piece, the Instant Phaser Mk II occupies a narrow but valuable position. It excels where sonic compromise and intentional imperfection enhance recordings. For transparent, modern phasing, alternatives exist. For capturing the specific character that shaped decades of rock and progressive music, this plugin delivers legitimate results.
