About this plugin
Arturia's Phaser BI-TRON stands as a thoroughly considered reimagining of the classic voltage-controlled phaser architecture that defined modulation effects from the 1970s onward. Rather than simply recreating a single source, the plugin doubles down on the core concept: two independent 12-stage all-pass filter networks, each with dedicated depth and feedback controls, paired with dual sweep generators that operate asynchronously or locked to tempo.
The technical implementation reveals careful attention to the original's analog character. All-pass filter chains of this depth naturally produce the characteristic swooshing, almost vocal quality that makes phasers either essential or objectionable depending on context. Where BI-TRON distinguishes itself is in routing flexibility. The choice between series and parallel signal paths, combined with mono or stereo operation, yields genuinely distinct tonal signatures rather than cosmetic variations. Running both phasers in parallel, for instance, creates the kind of dense, swirling modulation that would be difficult to achieve through conventional serial stacking.

The expression pedal implementation and envelope control options provide real-time manipulation possibilities beyond simple rate sweeping. The 37 included presets demonstrate clear editorial vision, suggesting practical applications rather than exercise in extremity.
This plugin suits producers working across electronic music, psychedelic rock, and experimental domains where phaser effects provide textural foundation rather than subtle seasoning. Engineers seeking to explore modulation beyond conventional uses will find the dual-circuit architecture and routing options legitimately useful. It represents a principled expansion of a proven concept rather than unnecessary complication.
