About this plugin
Softube's dual-EQ approach addresses a practical problem in modern mixing: the need for both surgical correction and tonal character in a single mixing chain. The bundle pairs their modern Equalizers plugin with the Reference series, allowing users to stack complementary tools without sacrificing workflow or CPU efficiency.
The Reference 1956 and 1998 equalizers are modeled after classic passive designs that have defined professional mixing for decades. Rather than emulate these through standard digital processing, Softube captured the minimum-phase behavior and transformer saturation that made the originals sonically distinctive. The 1956 excels at broad-stroke tonal shaping, particularly in low-frequency work where its passive architecture imparts a naturally cohesive warmth. The 1998 builds on this foundation with parallel EQ bands and shelving filters that add musicality without obvious coloration.

Used independently, these Reference EQs serve mix engineers seeking authentic vintage character with modern conveniences like stereo operation and expanded frequency selections. Stacked with the Equalizers plugin, they create a hybrid workflow: precise digital correction followed by analog-modeled musicality, or vice versa.
The bundle's strength lies in its flexibility for mixing engineers and mastering professionals who understand the sonic difference between corrective and colorful equalization. It's less suited to users seeking a single, all-purpose tone-shaping tool, but invaluable for those who appreciate how 1950s passive design principles can complement contemporary digital precision. The implementation demonstrates genuine technical consideration rather than feature-bloat marketing.
