About this plugin
Session Keys Upright positions itself as a deliberately character-driven piano instrument rather than a universal solution. The dual sampling approach offers meaningful sonic differentiation: the Open mode employs meticulously detuned samples that generate a natural chorus effect across the stereo field, while Closed delivers a tight, modern piano with surgical clarity and presence. This philosophical divide allows producers to match the instrument to their material rather than compromise on either end of the spectrum.
The effects chain is competently assembled without pretense. The 3-band EQ, convolution reverb, and compressor provide essential shaping tools, though these remain functional rather than exceptional. The Colour module warrants attention, however. Its 22 effect emulations range from subtle tonal adjustments mimicking classic outboard processing to extreme transformations that render the source unrecognizable. This proves particularly valuable for scoring and experimental work where conventional piano processing falls short.

The Pentamorph controller distinguishes Session Keys from competing piano instruments. Rather than relegating sound transformation to menu diving, this pentagonal interface assigns morphing parameters to a single intuitive control, enabling real-time evolution during performance or arrangement. For producers accustomed to hardware synthesis, this tactile approach provides welcome immediacy.
Session Keys Upright succeeds most noticeably in contemporary contexts where upright pianos provide tonal advantages over grands. Hip-hop, pop, and rock production benefit from its punch and defined character. The Open setting's chorus-like quality suits ambient and textural work, while Closed serves aggressive material demanding presence. For engineers seeking a specialized upright rather than an all-purpose solution, this instrument delivers distinctive voice with genuine creative potential.
