About this plugin
Duck 2 Upgrade represents a meaningful evolution in envelope-based ducking, building on the original's foundation with substantive improvements that justify the upgrade path. The plugin's core strength lies in its graphical envelope editor, which translates the traditionally opaque process of sidechain compression into a visual, intuitive workflow. Rather than wrestling with compressor ratios and attack times, users draw precisely the volume contour their mix requires, then anchor it to the beat via internal LFO, MIDI, or external sidechain inputs.
The multiband mode distinguishes Duck 2 within its category. By splitting incoming audio into three independent frequency bands, each with separate envelope control, the tool addresses frequency-specific masking issues without resorting to parallel processing chains or surgical EQ moves. This proves particularly valuable for managing low-end competition between kick and bass, where surgical precision prevents the hollowed-out character that aggressive broadband ducking can introduce.

The preset library, exceeding 200 entries, provides genuine starting points rather than aspirational concepts. These cover standard ducking applications alongside rhythmic tremolo patterns and creative gating effects, suggesting sonic territory beyond conventional sidechain use. The group synchronization feature and audio-to-envelope conversion add workflow efficiency for session-heavy work.
Duck 2 occupies practical middle ground between specialized tools like Cableguys Kickstart and general-purpose dynamics plugins. It's best suited for electronic music producers, remix engineers, and mix engineers prioritizing transparent vocal clarity and tight low-end management. The upgrade from v1 justifies consideration for existing users seeking expanded creative possibilities and refined operational efficiency.
