About this plugin
Have Audio's Cattaneo Upright Piano captures the textural intimacy of a worn, characterful upright rather than pursuing concert grand fidelity. Built from 647 samples in NCW format, the instrument prioritizes the human elements of acoustic piano performance - mechanical noise, pedal engagement, and the subtle artifacts of touch - making it genuinely compelling for songwriting and introspective work where personality matters more than pristine reproduction.
The design philosophy centers on five discrete mixable channels: the core piano sound, a dedicated "human" layer that responds to sustain pedal input with realistic engagement and release noises, swells for dynamic wash effects, a distortion layer labeled "rust," and a color channel derived from vintage claviharp sampling. This modular approach allows producers to sculpt highly individualized textures, from relatively acoustic presentations to heavily processed soundscapes that retain melodic clarity.

The effects architecture reflects contemporary production priorities. Beyond standard reverb (six algorithms), delay, and attack shaping, Cattaneo includes lo-fi tape simulation with selectable hiss character and pitch wobble, an arpeggiator for rhythmic texture, and three assignable pedal effects slots offering EQ, compression, saturation, chorus, phaser, and Leslie emulation. The sustain pedal volume control deserves mention - it genuinely responds to MIDI pedal data, mimicking the acoustic phenomenon rather than simply retriggering notes.
Cattaneo occupies a distinct position among upright piano libraries. It eschews the clinical accuracy approach of larger orchestral collections, instead targeting producers who value sonic personality and creative flexibility. For indie and alternative producers comfortable with character over comprehensiveness, it delivers substantial utility.
