Product Overview
bx_subsynth is Brainworx's interpretation of subharmonic synthesis, modeled after the dbx 120XP but substantially expanded in scope. The plugin generates discrete bass frequencies one octave below the input signal across up to three frequency bands, with the addition of a higher band allowing synthesis of fundamental frequencies from sources beyond the 120XP's original capabilities - snare drums and acoustic guitars now benefit from subharmonic treatment. This approach differs fundamentally from psychoacoustic processing, which creates phantom frequencies your brain perceives but your speakers cannot reproduce. bx_subsynth generates real, physical bass that occupies actual frequency space.
The Tight Punch control adds a resonant sub-bass peak while filtering unwanted low-end mud, tightening the overall low-end character. Edge processing operates in Smooth or Harsh modes, applying compression and saturation that ranges from controlled cohesion to aggressive distortion - useful for drilling in drum punch or pushing bass guitar into the mix with attitude. The discrete nature of the generated frequencies leaves headroom across the bass band, preventing the muddiness typical of traditional EQ-based bass boosting.
The plugin's primary strength lies in its ability to add genuine bottom end where none exists, rather than merely emphasizing frequencies already present in the source material. This makes it particularly valuable for thin recordings, under-captured drums, or situations where traditional bass augmentation creates masking issues. While subharmonic synthesis has niche applications, bx_subsynth's expanded band structure and modern controls position it as the most versatile implementation of the concept for contemporary production.
