About this plugin
The bx_console SSL 9000 J is a faithful emulation of the SSL 9000 J series console, the workhorse mixing platform that defined the sound of major label hip-hop, pop, and R&B production throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Developed by Brainworx using original SSL schematics and refined in close collaboration with mixing legend Michael Brauer, this plugin captures the sonic signature that shaped records for Jay-Z, Usher, Beyoncé, and countless other platinum artists.
The 9000 J represents SSL's cleanest iteration - extended low-end definition, transparent top-end extension, and superior headroom compared to earlier console designs make it particularly suited to modern production where clarity and separation matter. The emulation accurately models the console's signal path, including the iconic channel strip topology that combines smooth EQ with the distinctive SSL compression character.

Beyond straightforward console emulation, the plugin introduces digital-domain features unavailable on hardware: adjustable THD control for shaping harmonic content, a compressor mix parameter for parallel compression blending, and V-Gain staging for precise analog-style signal control. These additions provide practical flexibility without compromising authenticity.
Best suited for mixing engineers, producers, and hip-hop specialists seeking the balanced, modern SSL sound, this plugin scales from individual tracks to full mix bus processing. While other console emulations exist, the combination of meticulous hardware modeling, Michael Brauer's sonic oversight, and SSL's official collaboration gives this plugin particular credibility among engineers who worked extensively with the original hardware. It functions as both a mixing tool and a tonal reference point grounded in documented industry standards.
