About this plugin
Pan Knob represents a meaningful refinement to a mixing fundamental that has remained largely unchanged since stereo recording's inception. Boz Digital Labs addresses a genuine technical problem: traditional linear panning, which simply reduces one channel's level while boosting the other, produces unnatural results in headphone listening and can compromise low-frequency balance across the stereo field.
The plugin's approach centers on three core compensations. It decouples low-frequency panning from midrange and high-frequency movement, keeping bass anchored to the center while allowing upper frequencies to pan fully. This mimics how the human head naturally filters directional information, allowing low frequencies to reach both ears regardless of spatial positioning. A selectable micro-delay adds further naturalism by simulating the time differential in how wavefronts arrive at each ear. Both features toggle independently, offering flexibility between transparent operation and more pronounced processing.

The practical benefit extends beyond headphone optimization. Mix translation improves considerably, particularly for material destined for consumer playback on headphones or compact systems where traditional panning creates fatiguing artifacts. The plugin handles unconventional panning decisions gracefully - hard-panned bass or snare work surprisingly well without the typical compromises that plague standard panning.
Pan Knob occupies a valuable niche among stereo imaging tools. It's essential for mixing engineers working primarily in headphones or targeting music for that delivery format. Mastering engineers will appreciate its clean integration anywhere in the signal chain. While specialized rather than essential for studio mixing broadly, it addresses a legitimate problem with genuine technical merit and delivers sonic improvements that justify its inclusion in professional workflows.
