About this plugin
Black Salt Audio's CR-1 is a dynamics and distortion processor built explicitly for aggressive drum processing and mix enhancement. The plugin combines a multiband compressor with integrated saturation circuitry, designed to add controlled density and harmonic character to sources that require presence and punch.
The core "Crush" circuit applies parallel compression that thickens transient material without sacrificing definition. Unlike standard compressors, the CR-1 prioritizes transient preservation while adding weight beneath the attack, making it particularly effective on drums, percussion, and other rhythmic sources that benefit from simultaneous clarity and aggression. The distortion stage layers harmonic content that ranges from subtle warmth to more aggressive grind, depending on input gain and saturation control.

Where the CR-1 distinguishes itself is in its approach to mixing utility. Rather than functioning as a precision surgical tool, it's engineered as a character device that forces sources to occupy space through sheer energy and presence. This makes it most valuable to producers and mix engineers working in genres where track density and loudness matter - heavy music, hip-hop production, electronic music, and commercial pop where drums must compete for attention.
Compared to stock DAW plugins or transparent dynamics tools, the CR-1 trades precision for attitude. It's not designed for transparent gain reduction or surgical dynamic control. Instead, it occupies similar territory as specialized drum bus processors and console emulations that prioritize sonic aggression and character over clinical control.
The plugin suits engineers already familiar with parallel compression and saturation techniques seeking a dedicated, streamlined tool for this specific mixing task.
