About this plugin
BFD's Vintage Recording Techniques expansion pack delivers a methodologically rigorous approach to drum sampling by implementing five documented microphone techniques across a Ludwig Classic Maple kit. Rather than relying on generic "vintage" processing, the pack captures genuine tonal characteristics inherent to each recording method, providing users with acoustically informed starting points for mixing.
The technical approach centers on authentic miking configurations. The ORTF setup employs paired AKG C451B condensers to achieve coherent stereo imaging with strong mono compatibility, historically favored in jazz and classical recording. The spaced pair technique uses AKG C414 XLS large diaphragm condensers for wide stereo separation and tonal complexity. The Blumlein configuration applies ribbon microphones in crossed cardioid patterns, yielding smooth high-frequency rolloff and natural ambience. Glyn Johns technique, popularized across classic rock records, uses Neumann TLM103 overheads integrated with close-miked snare and kick channels. Direct microphones on individual kit pieces provide independent control and bleed modeling between shells.

The 29 microphone channels offer genuine mixing flexibility beyond preset-dependent solutions. Each drum is recorded with both stick articulation and natural resonance, capturing the kit's interactive behavior rather than isolated samples.
This pack suits producers and engineers seeking authentic vintage sonics without reaching for external processing or tape emulation plugins. The methodical approach to capture differentiates it from drum libraries built on convenience rather than recording science. Engineers familiar with vintage session techniques will recognize the familiar tonal signatures, while those exploring traditional recording methods gain practical reference points for their own work.
