About this plugin
BFD Heavy is a drum expansion that delivers the sonic foundation hard rock and metal productions demand. Built on meticulous multitrack recordings of two Yamaha birch kits - the Recording Custom and Birch Custom Absolute - this collection captures the focused attack and controlled sustain these instruments naturally provide. The birch shells deliver the midrange presence and crack essential to cutting through dense arrangements, particularly in genres where drum definition matters as much as overall power.
The kit selection here is deliberately focused. Three kicks with both felt and wood beater variations allow engineers to dial in anything from thudding low-end to articulate click, while nine toms mapped across multiple articulations - including rim shots, rim clicks, and half-edge samples on the bonus Jimmy Chamberlin snare - provide the expressive vocabulary modern metal production requires. The inclusion of stick and mallet versions for five toms acknowledges that serious producers often layer different playing techniques within a single kit.

Recording methodology aligns with BFD's established approach on other Yamaha-based expansions, emphasizing clear studio isolation over ambient coloration. This technical discipline means Heavy integrates cleanly into dense mixes without fighting for headroom.
For metal and hard rock producers, this expansion strikes the practical middle ground between generic sample packs and prohibitively expensive custom recordings. Experienced engineers will find the sonic palette immediately usable for contemporary production while remaining open enough for creative reprocessing. The kit's birch character particularly rewards aggressive EQ and compression without degrading into brittleness - a critical advantage when layering drum samples in heavily processed contexts.
