About this plugin
BFD Decatom is a specialized percussion expansion for Native Instruments' BFD3 drum plugin that addresses a specific but valuable sonic territory: melodic tom work spanning a full octave. The expansion consists of 10 individually sampled tuned toms, each featuring a 6-inch head with depths ranging from 6 to 24 inches, creating a comprehensive chromatic range suitable for both pitched percussion passages and unconventional melodic applications.
The samples themselves were captured using the same studio methodology applied to BFD's Jazz & Funk and Percussion expansions, ensuring sonic consistency within the broader ecosystem. Each tom was recorded with stick and mallet articulations, providing tonal variety across different playing techniques. Within BFD3's environment, the toms respond to the platform's comprehensive tuning and effects processing capabilities, allowing producers to reshape their character substantially beyond the recorded source material.

Decatom's practical applications extend well beyond traditional drum kit contexts. Producers working in electronic music, cinematic composition, and experimental production will find the chromatically playable range particularly useful for bassline generation, rhythmic melody work, and textural layering. The toms integrate seamlessly with BFD3's existing sound design toolkit, enabling dynamic modulation and effects chains that can push the instruments toward either naturalistic or heavily processed sonic territories.
This expansion works best for producers already invested in the BFD3 ecosystem who need melodic percussion capabilities without stepping outside their primary drum plugin environment. It's a focused tool that doesn't attempt comprehensive percussion coverage but executes its specific purpose with technical competence and recording quality consistent with BFD's established standards.
