Sospiro Strings is a sample-based Kontakt instrument designed specifically for orchestral swells, the foundational texture in contemporary film scoring and ambient music production. Developed by Ben Osterhouse, it captures four string sections (violin, viola, cello, bass) performing controlled crescendos from silence into sustained tones, then back to silence.

The library's core strength lies in its dual vibrato and non-vibrato sample sets, each recorded at 110 BPM and time-stretchable across four predetermined swell lengths. The vibrato variants deliver warmth and natural ensemble character, while non-vibrato recordings provide transparency that reveals tonal shifts as dynamics rise and fall. This distinction matters practically: time-stretching vibrato samples beyond certain thresholds degrades their sonic integrity, making the non-vibrato option essential for tempo flexibility.

Key to Sospiro Strings' usability is the Smart Release algorithm, which intelligently extends the tail of each swell proportionally to how long the performer holds the initial note. Combined with the Sync feature - allowing subsequent notes in a chord to align temporally with the first - this enables genuinely cohesive string textures that respond intuitively to performance input rather than requiring careful manual timing.

Separate instruments are available as individual .nki files, with a mixed preset for memory-conscious sketching. The Length Multiplier parameter addresses the frequent production scenario where a project's tempo conflicts with the desired swell pace.
