About this plugin
AudioThing's dual-plugin approach to vintage enhancement combines two distinct philosophies for brightening and clarifying audio. Type A emulates the encode stage of Dolby A noise reduction, functioning as a multiband compander that dynamically emphasizes high frequencies inversely proportional to signal level. Quiet passages receive substantial brightness and presence while loud material remains largely untouched, delivering natural definition without artifacts or harmonic alteration. Type B operates differently, generating new harmonic content through filtering and distortion before allowing you to blend the synthesized frequencies back with the original signal, functioning as a true exciter rather than a dynamic processor.
The technical separation between these tools makes the bundle particularly valuable. Type A excels on sources requiring transparent presence enhancement - vocals, acoustic instruments, and already well-recorded material benefit from its surgical approach. Type B works better on sources that genuinely lack harmonic richness, adding character and air through synthesis rather than dynamic manipulation.

This dual approach acknowledges that "dull" audio stems from different causes and requires different solutions. The bundle's strength lies in its foundation in proven analog techniques rather than novelty algorithms. For working engineers and producers, having both compander-based and harmonic-generation tools in a single package addresses the most common enhancement scenarios without resorting to generic EQ curves.
The plugins represent competent emulations of legitimate studio techniques that remain relevant despite decades of digital advancement. They're most useful in professional and semi-professional contexts where subtle enhancement matters more than dramatic transformation.
