PlexiTape

PlexiTape is Audiority's circuit-accurate emulation of the Maestro Echoplex, the solid-state tape delay that defined studio and stage sound throughout the 1970s. Rather than offering superficial aesthetic recreation, Audiority modeled the entire signal chain: the FET preamp stages, tape saturation characteristics, motor speed stability, and playback head response. The result is a plugin that captures both the mechanical warmth and the subtle compression that made the original so musically transparent.

The plugin's architecture centers on an auxiliary echo line with independent pan control, enabling genuine stereo spread rather than the artificial width found in most digital delays. Three operational modes provide flexibility - standard echo with varispeed control from 3 to 15 IPS, a preamp-only mode for tape coloration without delay, and Sound On Sound, which transforms the unit into a looping recorder by bypassing the echo return. This last mode proves invaluable for ambient layering and experimental composition.

Audiority included an adjustable internal hum generator that serves dual purposes: it grounds the sound in vintage character while enabling controlled self-oscillation for textural effects. Tempo sync integration allows tight integration with modern DAW workflows, though the varispeed mode remains available for those preferring the organic drift of analog-speed variation.

PlexiTape occupies a unique position among tape echo emulations. While competitors offer broader feature sets, few match its depth of sonic modeling. It excels for engineers seeking vintage echo character without compromise, particularly in rock, psychedelic, and experimental contexts where tape echo remains tonally irreplaceable.
