About this plugin
Arturia's Synclavier V is a software emulation of New England Digital's legendary 1980s digital synthesizer, developed in collaboration with original programmer Cameron Jones. Rather than modeling analog circuitry or relying on sample playback, it authentically implements the hybrid synthesis engine that defined the instrument: additive synthesis layered with frequency modulation, delivering textures distinctly unobtainable from conventional synth architectures.
The plugin excels at generating its characteristic digital signature - crystalline, complex timbres with an industrial edge that ranges from ethereal pads to deliberately harsh, unforgiving textures. This sonic character made the original hardware indispensable for 1980s film scoring and pop production, and the digital nature of the synthesis engine means these qualities transfer without compromise to the software version. The FM capabilities particularly shine for evolving, bell-like tones and metallic percussion that resist analog synthesis emulation.

Synclavier V targets producers and sound designers seeking authentic digital synthesis from that era, particularly those working in ambient, cinematic, and experimental electronic music. The preset library - curated from industry-recognized sound designers - significantly reduces the learning curve for users unfamiliar with additive and FM synthesis workflows. However, the deep editing interface rewards exploration from those willing to engage with the architecture.
Positioned as a specialized tool rather than a general-purpose workhorse, Synclavier V occupies a unique niche. Its sonic character and synthesis methodology differ fundamentally from modern subtractive alternatives and wavetable synths, making it genuinely complementary rather than redundant within a modern DAW environment.
