About this plugin
Arturia's Flanger BL-20 reimagines the classic bucket-brigade flanger with architectural sophistication that elevates it beyond straightforward vintage emulation. The plugin's core strength lies in its three independent modulation sources - LFO, envelope (internal or external), and manual control - which can be toggled and layered simultaneously. This architecture allows users to generate complex, evolving modulation textures impossible with traditional single-source designs.
The sonic character derives from authentic BBD circuitry modeling, delivering the characteristic warmth and subtle compression of vintage hardware. The zero-crossing delay technique produces the iconic "blip" artifacts that define classic flange, creating depth without sacrificing clarity across the frequency spectrum. A stereo enhancer expands the effect's spatial impact, with precise control over phase relationships between channels.

What distinguishes BL-20 from competitors is its control depth. The LFO shape modulators and function generator from Arturia's Pigments synthesis engine provide real creative leverage beyond preset browsing. Experienced sound designers will appreciate the ability to manipulate harmonic sweeps and stereo spread with surgical precision. The 28 presets serve as competent starting points rather than destination endpoints.
Best suited for mixing engineers and producers seeking dynamic modulation without excessive artificiality, and for electronic musicians who value hands-on parameter exploration. Compared to UAD's Empirical Labs Flanging or Waves' Renaissance Flanger, BL-20 offers greater modulation architecture at the cost of steeper learning curves. It occupies the sweet spot between simplicity and unlimited depth, making it the most versatile flanger plugin currently available for professional workflows.
