About this plugin
Arturia's CMI V is a meticulously engineered software recreation of the Fairlight CMI, the 1979 sampling workstation that fundamentally shaped 1980s production aesthetics. Rather than offering nostalgic approximation, this plugin delivers functional parity with the original hardware while expanding its sonic palette through modern enhancements.
The core architecture centers on three distinct sound generation engines working in parallel. The sampling engine provides access to the CMI's characteristic digital character - crisp, slightly brittle transients paired with natural harmonic decay that became the sonic signature of early MTV productions. The original additive synthesis engine allows granular control over individual harmonics across time, enabling the creation of evolving timbres impossible with standard subtractive synthesis. A newer Spectral synthesis mode simplifies harmonic shaping while maintaining the additive approach's fundamental advantages.

The plugin supports ten simultaneous instruments with independent mixing, layering, and sequencing capabilities. This architecture makes it equally viable for building complex arrangements or designing intricate textures through inter-instrument modulation. The implementation respects the original's workflow philosophy while adding contemporary modulation options that extend creative possibility.
CMI V suits producers seeking authentic early 1980s digital character for period-appropriate work, sound designers exploring additive synthesis without steep learning curves, and engineers needing convincing emulation of historically significant sample-based productions. While specialized in its sonic character, it competes effectively against broader workstations when authenticity or pedagogical value takes precedence over versatility. The plugin's narrow focus - faithful recreation with thoughtful expansion - positions it as essential for specific applications rather than universal production tool.
