About this plugin
Antelope Audio's X904 is a gate and expander plugin modeled after a foundational dynamics processor from the early 1980s. The plugin faithfully recreates the hardware unit's VCA-based architecture, delivering the fast transient response and musical envelope control that made the original indispensable for drum work and live sound reinforcement. Unlike software gates that often feel sluggish or clinical, the X904 maintains the snappy character of its hardware inspiration while providing transparent noise suppression without audible pumping or unnaturalness.
The core strength lies in its adaptive release mode, which intelligently adjusts the gate's closing behavior based on the input signal's characteristics. This prevents the artificial tail artifacts common to fixed-release designs. The switchable sidechain filter adds practical flexibility, allowing engineers to tailor gate triggering to specific frequency ranges - essential when processing complex drum sources or instruments with overlapping transient information. The expander functionality extends the tool's utility beyond simple on/off gating, useful for surgical reduction of low-level noise without complete signal interruption.

The X904 excels in drum recording cleanup, particularly for tightening kick and snare tracks or removing unwanted bleed. It's equally effective on guitar and live sound applications where precision envelope control matters. Among comparable modern gates, it occupies a distinct position by prioritizing sonic musicality over aggressive processing - appropriate for engineers who value the character of their source material. The plugin represents a thoughtful approach to a fundamental mixing tool, combining historical accuracy with practical studio workflow.
