About this plugin
The VEQ-STU 169 is Antelope Audio's faithful emulation of the EQ section found in Swiss mixing consoles from the late 1970s and early 1980s, a lineage it shares with its predecessor, the VEQ-STU 089. This inductor-based topology delivers the transparent, subtly colored sonic character that made those original desks studio standards for decades.
The architecture centers on three fixed-frequency bands: a 60 Hz low shelving section for foundational weight control, a sweepable mid-range peaking filter spanning 150 Hz to 7 kHz for targeted presence shaping, and a 10 kHz high shelving band for air and brightness. This straightforward design prioritizes effectiveness over complexity, making it ideal for rapid mixing decisions and broad tonal adjustments rather than surgical problem-solving.

What distinguishes the VEQ-STU 169 from typical digital EQ emulations is its analog character. The inductor-based design imparts a musical warmth and natural headroom that resists the clinical precision often associated with parametric equalizers. The high-frequency response exhibits particular smoothness, never harsh or fatiguing even under aggressive boost.
The plugin appeals primarily to mix engineers and mastering specialists seeking console-grade coloration without resorting to outboard hardware. Its simplicity makes it equally valuable as a tracking EQ for sources benefiting from gentle shaping. Available as a native plugin and Synergy Core real-time option, the VEQ-STU 169 occupies a unique position among vintage console emulations: approachable enough for quick wins, sonically sophisticated enough for critical detail work.
