About this plugin
The NEU-W492 is a parametric equalizer plugin modeled after a precision four-band module that became standard equipment in European mastering suites and broadcast facilities throughout the 1980s. Antelope Audio's recreation is based on detailed component-level analysis of an original unit, capturing the circuit behavior of its input and output amplifier stages, inductor networks, and signal path architecture.
Sonically, the NEU-W492 distinguishes itself through exceptional clarity in the upper midrange and high frequencies without introducing the brittleness common to many digital EQ implementations. The low end delivers definition rather than bloat, a characteristic directly attributable to the original's carefully tuned low-frequency circuitry. The four fully parametric bands feature overlapping frequency ranges, allowing either broad tonal shaping or granular surgical work depending on the task at hand.

The plugin's phase-coherent operation and transparent character make it particularly valuable for mastering applications, where coloration must remain inaudible even across multiple processing chains. It performs equally well during mixing, where its musical response curve encourages intuitive decision-making rather than fighting the EQ's inherent character.
This tool suits experienced engineers accustomed to working with high-end analog equipment and those seeking an alternative to the more present, colored personalities dominating modern EQ plugin design. Compared to more forgiving, character-driven options, the NEU-W492 demands accurate gain staging and precise frequency selection but rewards that attention with results that translate predictably across monitoring systems and playback environments.
