About this plugin
The MUM M8 DSP is a faithful digital recreation of the filter topology found in the Akai S950, the 12-bit sampler that defined lo-fi hip-hop and sample-based music production. ALM/Busy Circuits has extended the original circuit's capabilities with modern conveniences while preserving the hardware's distinctive sonic signature - a smooth, almost liquid low-pass filter response that sits somewhere between analog warmth and digital character.
The plugin's core strength lies in its ability to process complex sources with a transparent yet characterful touch. The filter exhibits the gentle tone-sucking quality associated with classic sampler architecture, making it particularly effective on drums, vocals, and textured pads. Where it diverges from a standard low-pass is in its resonance implementation, which can self-oscillate aggressively and clip when pushed, introducing harmonic distortion that ranges from subtle coloration to pronounced acidic squeals.

Additional controls for saturation, bit-depth reduction, and a clock bleed switch add considerable texture and harmonic complexity. The clock bleed function specifically emulates timing artifacts from the original hardware, introducing subtle digital artifacts that enhance character without overwhelming the signal. The bit-depth control functions as downsampling, systematically degrading the input resolution for color-rich, intentionally lo-fi character.
The MUM M8 DSP is best suited for producers and engineers seeking vintage digital processing with modern flexibility - those working in sample-based, ambient, or experimental genres will find the most direct applications. It occupies a specific niche, excelling where smooth yet characterful filtering and deliberate sonic degradation are assets rather than liabilities.
