About this plugin
XLN Audio's XO Expansion: Boom Bap targets producers seeking authentic hip-hop rhythm construction rooted in the golden era of MPC-driven production. The expansion delivers 75 fully editable beat sequences alongside 160+ curated one-shot samples, designed to capture the sonic DNA of J Dilla, DJ Premier, and 9th Wonder - practitioners who defined modern boom-bap aesthetics through swing, sample manipulation, and layered percussion.
The technical foundation centers on XO's drag-and-drop sample replacement engine, allowing producers to swap individual drum hits without rebuilding sequences. This approach proves particularly valuable for customizing vinyl-warmed sonics to specific project contexts. The sequencer reveals full beat anatomy, exposing swing ratios, timing nudges, and layering decisions that generate pocket and groove. Rather than presenting static loops, the expansion functions as an educational tool alongside a production resource.

Sonically, the collection emphasizes textured, organic drum character - crunchy kicks with pronounced sub presence, snares with crisp attack and natural decay, and hi-hats processed with period-appropriate swing. Vinyl warmth permeates the samples without relying on excessive filtering or distortion, maintaining clarity essential for modern mixing.
This expansion suits both producers seeking authentic boom-bap fundamentals and experienced beatmakers requiring high-quality, customizable drum sources. It occupies a distinct category beyond traditional sample packs by prioritizing editable sequences over loop libraries. Among comparable tools, XO Expansion: Boom Bap stands out for combining rigorous sample curation with transparent beat deconstruction, appealing to producers who value both sonic authenticity and creative control.
