About this plugin
XLN Audio's Fairfax Vol. 1 captures the drum sound of one of rock music's most storied recording facilities. Sourced from Fairfax Recordings in Los Angeles (formerly Sound City), this ADpak expansion for Addictive Drums 2 provides a cohesive kit built around a vintage Gretsch "Stop Sign" shell pack paired with two contrasting snares: a Craviotto Custom Shop and the ultra-rare Tama Bell Brass "Terminator." The combination yields drums with pronounced punch and clarity, characteristic of analog-era rock recording.
The sonic signature reflects both the instrument choices and the studio's acoustic properties. The kick drum carries substantial low-end presence without excessive mud, while the snares offer distinct personality - the Craviotto delivers crisp attack with woody resonance, whereas the Terminator provides a darker, more compressed crack ideal for aggressive material. The four-piece tom configuration spans practical tunings, with two separate 14-inch options allowing flexibility in voicing. Cymbal selection emphasizes definition over wash: Iveson's custom hihats and dark ride provide articulation, while Zildjian K series crashes and the china round out the palette.

The included 31 presets demonstrate thoughtful tuning, translating the studio's character into usable starting points rather than requiring extensive customization. This package suits rock, alternative, and modern country productions where articulate, driving drums serve the song. While Addictive Drums 2 remains software-bound, Fairfax Vol. 1 stands as a legitimate alternative to sample libraries for engineers prioritizing coherent kit character over endless customization options.
