About this plugin
Addictive Drums 2: Metal & Heavy Collection represents a focused refinement of XLN Audio's drum plugin architecture, specifically calibrated for heavy music production. The collection bundles the Modern Heavy ADpak, a comprehensive drum kit sample library built around a Tama Star kit recorded at Stockholm's renowned Gröndahl studio by engineer David Castillo, alongside complementary MIDI packs and beat content.
The kit's technical foundation rests on stereo-captured double kick drums that address a persistent limitation in virtual drumming: the unnaturally rigid machine gun effect of programmed rapid-fire patterns. Addictive Drums 2's alternating kick feature automatically distributes rapid sixteenth-note patterns across separately sampled left and right kick sources, generating convincing human variation without manual MIDI editing. This proves particularly valuable for the relentless kick patterns endemic to modern metal, deathcore, and progressive music.

The kit itself includes six snares offering genuine tonal variety across different tunings and playing styles, complemented by Paiste Formula 602 cymbals that deliver the crisp, articulate character essential to cutting through dense metal mixes. Castillo's custom treatment and studio positioning, documented as compelling enough to convert recording drummers away from their own hardware, suggests serious attention to resonance and dynamic response.
The Modern Heavy Collection functions best as a complete ecosystem rather than a standalone plugin, benefiting from the included MIDI resources and beat content. It occupies a specific niche within drum plugin territory - neither universal nor experimental, but rather a purpose-built tool for producers and engineers working in metal, progressive, and related heavy genres where authentic, dynamic drum capture remains essential to commercial competitiveness.
