About this plugin
Waves' collaboration with Tony Maserati yields a vocal effects processor that distills his mixing methodology into three distinct signal chains. Rather than serving as a conventional reverb plugin, VX1 functions as a complete vocal treatment system where delay and reverb work interdependently to create cohesive spatial textures tailored to different song contexts.
The three Contours represent genuine mixing philosophies rather than parameter presets. Contour 1 emulates a controlled studio or small venue environment, providing subtle spatial enhancement without displacing the vocal from the mix. Contour 2 expands into a larger chamber with reflective pre-delays, designed specifically for balladic material where extended decay enhances emotional resonance. Contour 3 optimizes for uptempo recordings with compressed room characteristics and synchronized pre-delay, preventing temporal muddiness in faster vocal performances.

Beyond reverb selection, VX1 incorporates mixing-specific controls that address practical engineering challenges. The Compress function in Contours 1 and 2 accentuates vocal nuance and articulation, while Contour 3's Air control provides presence-focused clarity. Customized Bass and Treble curves on each Contour prevent the frequency imbalances common to generic spatial effects.
This approach will appeal most to engineers working across multiple genres who require vocal solutions without surrendering mix clarity. The 16 included presets demonstrate real-world applications rather than experimental variations, making VX1 immediately useful in production rather than requiring extensive customization. For mixing engineers familiar with Maserati's work on major label productions, VX1 provides direct access to his spatial processing approach.
