About this plugin
Waves' HLS Channel brings the sonic signature of Olympic Studios' legendary Helios console into your DAW with genuine fidelity to the hardware's behavior. Developed in collaboration with Eddie Kramer, who engineered defining recordings by Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones, this plugin captures the Helios' character across both its signal path and its coloration.
The core appeal lies in the preamp modeling, which delivers the console's signature harmonic saturation with variable drive that responds musically rather than clinically to input levels. This isn't merely distortion simulation - it's the subtle compression and tonal warmth that made the Helios a fixture on countless classic rock records. The three-band EQ faithfully reproduces the original's intuitive design, with a presence peak that adds controlled brightness without harshness, alongside sculpted low and mid ranges that sit sources forward in a mix with authority.

HLS Channel works effectively across multiple use cases. On individual tracks, it imparts the gloss of console summing without degrading clarity. On buses and masters, it functions as a cohesive tonal anchor, knitting disparate elements together with the Helios' characteristic shimmer. The inclusion of historically accurate noise and hum options allows engineers to dial in authentic vintage character or maintain clinical cleanliness depending on aesthetic preference.
For producers and engineers working within or drawing inspiration from classic rock and soul production, HLS Channel provides credible access to a console's sonic DNA. It's particularly valuable in contexts where the Helios' specific tonal flavor - bright yet refined - serves the mix rather than fighting it. The plugin stands as a competent emulation that respects both the source hardware and the engineering intelligence behind it.
