About this plugin
Waldorf's Attack 3 represents a significant refinement of the company's 2001 percussion synthesizer, delivering a contemporary synthesis engine purpose-built for rhythmic production. The instrument prioritizes sound design flexibility through virtual analogue architecture, moving beyond simple drum machine emulation to enable deep synthesis-driven percussion creation.
The core synthesis engine operates on familiar principles but with modern refinements. Dual envelopes per sound employ multi-stage ADBDSR curves with full modulatable parameters, while two LFOs offer tempo sync and sample-and-hold modulation alongside conventional waveforms. The filter section now includes 24 dB options alongside positive and negative comb filters, complemented by six distinct saturation modes ranging from soft clipping to transistor emulation. This combination yields results from clinical to characterful depending on production intent.

Sample integration represents Attack 3's secondary voice. Beyond factory drum machine libraries spanning analogue and 1990s digital aesthetics, the plugin accommodates user samples with velocity mapping, round-robin cycling, and flexible playback start positions. This hybrid approach distinguishes it from purely synthetic percussion tools, offering producers bridge territory between sound design and sampling workflows.
The 24-sound per kit architecture with 12 simultaneous voices proves adequate for most production scenarios. Per-sound compression and EQ alongside six output busses enable efficient mixing integration within DAW environments.
Attack 3 suits producers valuing synthesis control without sacrificing sonic character. Its expanded modulation capabilities and filter palette make it competitive against specialized percussion tools while maintaining an accessible workflow for rapid iteration during production sessions.
