About this plugin
Vintage Vocals is a straightforward R&B background vocal engine from Big Fish Audio that prioritizes authenticity over pristine synthesis. Rather than attempting to model individual vocal mechanics, the plugin captures the textural and stylistic qualities of 1960s and 70s session singers through multisampled recordings of three experienced vocalists: Angela Clemmons, Janice Dempsey, and Tiffany T'Zelle Wilson. Each performer brings decades of experience in soul, funk, and gospel recording.
The instrument provides essential articulations commonly heard in vintage soul arrangements - sustained notes, staccato phrases, oohs and ahs, and swells with natural dynamic character. Preset chord patches enable quick harmonic layering, allowing producers to build three-part background harmonies with single key presses rather than laboriously programming individual vocal lines. This efficiency makes Vintage Vocals particularly valuable for sketch work and rapid arrangement exploration.

The sonic approach deliberately preserves the minor imperfections and character traits that define classic background vocal performances - slight timing variations, breath artifacts, and tonal idiosyncrasies that would typically be corrected in modern vocal processing. This stylistic commitment means the plugin works best in contexts that benefit from warmth and human presence rather than precision.
Vintage Vocals suits producers working across R&B, soul, indie rock, and hip-hop production who need convincing background vocal textures without access to session singers. It functions effectively as a creative tool for establishing vintage vocal pads and accent layers, though it cannot replicate the nuanced interpretation of live vocal performances. The plugin's narrow focus and intentionally imperfect character make it a specialized tool rather than a universal vocal solution.
