About this plugin
Vintage Strings 2 is a sampled strings library that reconstructs the sound of larger string sections from classic 1960s and 1970s R&B, soul, and pop records. Unlike orchestral string libraries that prioritize tonal purity, this instrument captures the textural character of period recordings, including the minor imperfections that defined those productions.
The core sonic approach centers on authentic documentation. Big Fish Audio recorded multiple string configurations using vintage Neumann U-87 and Royer ribbon microphones in a deliberately modest studio space rather than a concert hall. This intentional choice yields a closer, less reverberant sound that mirrors how these sections appeared on original master recordings. The resulting character is noticeably warmer and less "perfect" than modern orchestral samples, with a human quality that resists the glossiness typical of contemporary string libraries.

VS2 provides several string section configurations recorded in isolation, allowing users to layer and balance violas, cellos, and violins independently. This flexibility supports both full lush arrangements and leaner, more focused textures that sit naturally in contemporary production contexts.
The library serves producers working across soul, hip-hop, R&B, and pop who need authentic vintage string textures without resorting to extensive processing or compromises in playability. Experienced engineers will appreciate the honest tonal palette - these strings are genuinely useful for period-appropriate arrangements rather than aspirational orchestration. Among sampled string libraries, Vintage Strings 2 occupies a specific niche that values character and specificity over universal application, making it an essential tool for projects where vintage credibility matters.
