About this plugin
Vintage Doom Drums captures the specific sonic character of 1970s doom and heavy rock through meticulous instrument selection and recording technique. Ugritone recorded a curated collection of vintage and period-appropriate drums with calfskin heads and century-old snares, placing them in an intimate room that yields minimal reflections while preserving natural resonance. The result is characteristically dry and immediate, with the kind of analog warmth that modern drum samples typically struggle to replicate authentically.
The kick is a Tama ArtStar II 24x16, providing the deep fundamental mass essential to doom, while the snare selection spans six distinct options from Ludwig, Pearl, Rogers, and other classic manufacturers. This variety allows producers to dial in precisely the tonal character needed, from crisp articulation to darker, more blurred attacks. The five tom sizes cover both melodic variation and the dense layering typical of '70s rock recordings.

The cymbal complement emphasizes crash and ride sounds with Zildjian Avedis models alongside darker alternatives from Paiste and Zultan, creating options ranging from brash and cutting to moody and subdued. Eight presets handle common approaches across styles like tight studio work, modern doom, and black metal variations, though experienced users will likely dig into individual mic chains for custom toning.
Vintage Doom Drums suits producers and engineers pursuing authentic period tone without relying on layer stacking or heavy processing. It performs particularly well for doom, stoner, and heavy psych genres, though the underlying recording quality makes it viable for any style prioritizing warmth and character over clinical precision. At approximately 443 MB, it represents a focused alternative to comprehensive drum libraries.
