About this plugin
Universal Audio's Select 6 represents a pragmatic entry point into the company's expansive plugin ecosystem, bundling six essential processors that address foundational mixing and mastering tasks. The collection includes emulations of classic hardware: the Neve 1073 preamp, SSL E-Series channel strip, Manley Variable Mu compressor, Neve 2254 mastering compressor, Ampex ATR-102 tape machine, and a selection of reverbs and EQs derived from UA's broader catalog.
What distinguishes Select 6 from competing starter bundles is UA's meticulous attention to component modeling. Rather than simplified approximations, these plugins incorporate detailed circuit emulation that captures harmonic saturation, frequency response anomalies, and dynamic nonlinearities inherent to their hardware counterparts. The Neve 1073 exhibits the subtle top-end coloration and transformer warmth that makes the original valued in professional studios. The SSL strip delivers the expected aggressive midrange presence and efficacious gate-to-compressor integration. The Manley compressor demonstrates the characteristic soft-knee behavior and musical sidechain filtering that define its character.

This collection suits working producers and engineers seeking sonically credible tools without committing to UA's complete subscription model. The plugins integrate seamlessly into existing DAW workflows and function identically to their counterparts in higher-tier subscriptions, constrained only by track count limitations rather than sonic capability.
Among comparable bundles, Select 6 occupies a competitive position. Waves and Plugin Alliance offer more aggressive pricing for similar feature sets, though UA's modeling tends toward greater tonal sophistication. For engineers prioritizing sonic fidelity over breadth of tools, the investment remains justifiable.
