About this plugin
The Manley VOXBOX Channel Strip plugin delivers one of the most transparent emulations of a classic hardware vocal processor available in plugin form. Built from Universal Audio's meticulous modeling of the 1997 hardware unit, this tool combines a Class A tube preamp, vactrol optical compressor, three-band passive EQ, and integrated de-esser into a cohesive channel strip designed specifically for vocal recording and mixing.
The preamp section is where the VOXBOX distinguishes itself. Rather than merely simulating tube coloration, UA's Unison technology creates bi-directional communication with compatible Apollo interfaces, allowing the plugin to control physical mic preamp impedance and gain staging in real-time. This approach yields results noticeably closer to tracking through actual hardware than traditional plugin emulation typically achieves. The feedback-style topology imparts the characteristic warmth and harmonic density that made the original unit a fixture in professional studios.

The optical compressor operates in a pre-preamp position, controlling transients before gain staging occurs. Its 25 selectable attack and release combinations provide substantial flexibility for different vocal sources and performance styles, from controlled sibilance reduction to transparent dynamic evening. The passive EQ section handles tone shaping with the gentle, musical character Pultec-style circuits are known for, avoiding the clinical precision that can make vocals sound processed.
The VOXBOX suits mixing engineers working with vocal-heavy material and recording professionals seeking transparent mic preamp coloration without additional outboard gear. It remains a legitimate alternative to hardware for serious vocal work, particularly when used with Apollo interfaces.
