About this plugin
Universal Audio's Ampex ATR-102 plug-in recreates one of history's most sought-after mastering machines with unusual precision. Licensed directly by the Ampex Corporation, the emulation models the complete signal path including input and repro stages, transformers, and amplifier circuits that give this machine its distinctive sonic character.
The plugin excels at what analog tape does best: adding cohesion and musicality through subtle saturation and harmonic enrichment. Three tape head formats ( 1/4", 1/2", and 1" ), multiple tape formulations ( GP9, 456, 900, 250 ), and selectable speeds provide genuine tonal variation rather than superficial customization. The calibration controls allow you to adjust headroom and compression characteristics, making it possible to dial in anything from transparent glue to aggressive tape crunch.

For mastering engineers, the ATR-102 functions as both a character device and a gain-staging tool. The auto-gain feature maintains proper levels while you adjust repro and record parameters, eliminating the guesswork that plagued analog workflow. This proves invaluable when stacking the saturation you want alongside gain compensation.
The plug-in appeals primarily to mastering professionals and mix engineers seeking authentic tape coloration without the maintenance, expense, and space requirements of actual hardware. While other tape emulations exist, the ATR-102's direct Ampex authorization and circuit-level modeling set it apart from competitor interpretations. It represents the current gold standard for software-based analog tape saturation on stereo program material.
