About this plugin
PHAT 2 is UJAM's second generation virtual drummer plugin designed specifically for hip-hop and funk production. The instrument operates as an intelligent beat sequencer that generates drum patterns across 60 musical styles, encompassing 1,380 distinct rhythmical variations. Rather than requiring manual pattern programming, users select from 200 presets organized by musical context, then customize patterns through straightforward controls governing swing, humanization, and dynamic feel.
The core strength of PHAT 2 lies in its accessibility without compromising sonic flexibility. The plugin includes five drum kit variations that can be edited at the individual voice level, allowing producers to adjust kick, snare, hi-hat, and percussion elements independently. This approach serves both rapid beat sketching and detailed sound design. The enhanced mixer section in version 2 introduces saturation and maximization controls at the master level, providing tonal shaping capabilities beyond basic mixing.

Technical improvements in version 2 include multiple audio outputs, enabling individual drum elements to route separately within a DAW for external processing, and drag-and-drop phrase functionality that streamlines workflow integration. The intuitive interface minimizes learning curve friction, making PHAT 2 suitable for producers at any experience level.
PHAT 2 occupies a practical middle ground between sample-based beat packs and traditional drum machines. It excels for producers seeking authentic hip-hop and funk groove foundations without the time investment of pattern creation or the sonic limitations of static samples. The plugin functions most effectively as a foundational rhythm tool rather than a comprehensive production suite, delivering reliable, stylistically appropriate patterns suitable for further arrangement and layering.
