About this plugin
THORN represents a meaningful advancement in multiband transient processing, addressing a persistent limitation in the category: traditional shapers apply fixed detection logic regardless of source material. This plugin inverts that approach with its Tuneable Detection Engine, granting engineers direct control over the envelope follower itself through four parameters. Peak isolation focuses on initial attack transients, Body captures sustain characteristics, Gating prevents low-level noise from triggering processing, and Soft smooths excessive peaks. This architecture allows THORN to genuinely adapt to drums, percussion, acoustic instruments, and mixed sources rather than forcing material through predetermined response curves.
The four independent frequency bands enable surgical control without the phase issues and overlap that plague less thoughtfully designed splitters. Low end receives dedicated thump shaping, mids handle punch articulation, and highs manage air and presence - each band operating autonomously. The Zero-Loudness Illusion feature distinguishes THORN from competitors by delivering genuine transient weight and clarity without proportionally increasing peak levels, a distinction that matters considerably in mastered material and loudness-normalized streaming contexts.

THORN suits mixing engineers prioritizing precision drum work, mastering specialists managing complex material, and producers tackling acoustic recordings where aggressive processing typically degrades natural character. Compared to competitors like FabFilter Pro-MB or iZotope RX Loudness Control, THORN's detection tunability provides superior adaptability to unconventional sources, though workflow differs meaningfully from more visually oriented alternatives. The plugin executes its core function with technical competence and sonic transparency, making it a legitimate tool for discerning engineers rather than a category redefinition.
