About this plugin
Tales is a sampled instrument for HALion that models a classical nylon-string concert guitar recorded entirely in open tuning. Rather than capturing fretted positions across the fingerboard, Steinberg's sampling approach captures each string as a resonating element, yielding a fundamentally different sonic character than traditional guitar libraries. This methodology produces extended sustain and harmonic complexity that feels less like a plucked instrument and more like a continuously vibrating voice.
The instrument ships with four articulation layers - soft, hard, mute, and harmonics - allowing for subtle dynamic expression without requiring extensive keyswitching. The soft articulation prioritizes tonal warmth and decay, while the hard setting introduces percussive attack suitable for rhythmic applications. Muted strings provide textural options for dampened, intimate passages, and the harmonics layer accesses the natural overtone series.

Beyond direct playing, Tales includes over sixty preset textures designed for narrative contexts: fantasy, science fiction, drama, and emotional underscore work. These presets layer and process the base samples, creating pad-like environments and processed atmospheres. This approach positions Tales as both a playable instrument and a texture browser, blending traditional sampling methodology with contemporary sound design.
The plugin suits composers working in media and interactive music who prioritize tonal character over authentic guitar technique simulation. Its strength lies in intimate, sustained passages rather than fingerstyle realism. For producers seeking unconventional guitar textures or open-tuned harmonic material suitable for electronic integration, Tales offers a specialized, well-executed solution that balances usability with sonic depth.
