Tape by Soundiron is a Kontakt 5.5+ instrument built around acoustic recordings of sound sources degraded through worn cassette and microcassette tape machines. The developer processed these recordings through additional destruction and manipulation before organizing them into a cohesive percussion library. The result is a collection of several hundred individual strikes, stingers, multisamples and effects unified by a distinctly lo-fi, degraded character.
The sonic palette centers on the artifacts inherent to analog tape - wow, flutter, speed variation and mechanical noise - layered beneath percussive transients. This approach yields material that reads as genuinely weathered rather than artificially aged, making it particularly effective for glitch, IDM and experimental electronic music where authenticity of degradation matters. The library also serves well in ambient, downtempo and post-rock contexts where textural density can replace traditional rhythm.
The interface provides functional real-time controls: attack, edge and release envelopes, filter cutoff and resonance, 30 convolution reverb impulses spanning rooms and special effects, and adaptive arpeggiation. Bank preset loading with optional key-switching allows rapid sound navigation. All samples are exported as categorized stereo wave files, enabling use in any DAW or sampler.
Tape occupies a specific niche among percussion libraries. Unlike general-purpose sample packs, it prioritizes sonic coherence and a singular aesthetic vision. Producers working in minimalist or sci-fi sound design will find immediate utility, though the library's narrow tonal range limits applications in acoustic or contemporary classical contexts. The custom interface design feels intuitive without introducing unnecessary complexity, making it accessible for sound designers and musicians at various skill levels.
