About this plugin
Soundiron's Icicles & Pop Ice represents a focused exploration of prepared string resonance, capturing two complementary instruments built around tensioned stainless-steel soundboards. The sonic foundation centers on the interaction between plucked strings and rigid metallic surfaces, yielding the crystalline, bell-like character that defines the collection.
The library's technical architecture reflects serious sampling discipline. Three core articulations - plucked sustains, percussive strikes, and glisses - are captured across two microphone positions (close and contact perspectives), with up to 8x round-robin variation and six velocity layers per note. This granular capture approach yields 3,004 stereo samples, providing genuine harmonic variation rather than simple layering tricks.

The tonal distinction between instruments matters. Icicles delivers pure resonant shimmer through its single stainless-steel sheet, while Pop Ice adds a thin Styrofoam layer that generates sharp percussive attack before the sustained metal resonance emerges. This contrast proves valuable when designing complementary textures or when a single instrument feels insufficient for a particular passage.
The 21 Kontakt presets include both straightforward instrument configurations and 20 FX-processed pads and drones. The latter category demonstrates how these source materials respond to processing, though experienced sound designers will likely find more creative use exploring the raw articulations themselves.
This library suits composers seeking unconventional metallic textures, sound designers requiring nuanced prepared-string character, and producers working in ambient, experimental, or contemporary classical contexts. It occupies specific sonic territory rather than attempting comprehensive coverage, making it most valuable as a complementary tool rather than a primary string solution.
