About this plugin
Just Add Drums has engineered a Kontakt instrument that captures the raw, unpolished character of The Mars Volta's landmark 2003 debut. Rather than pursuing pristine studio polish, this kit emphasizes the organic resonance and dynamic response of Ludwig's Classic Maple kick paired with the dark, focused tone of a Ludwig Black Beauty snare. Zildjian and Paiste cymbals complete the arsenal with a deliberately unmatched, lived-in quality.
The instrument's architecture supports nuanced performance through four to five velocity layers and four round robins across all articulations, enabling naturalistic expression without sounding sampled or quantized. The snare rimshot maps to top velocity, a thoughtful detail that rewards organic playing dynamics. With multi-output routing, users can carve individual drum elements through separate mixing channels, applying parallel compression, EQ, or saturation to taste.

This tool excels for producers seeking chaotic energy within controlled parameters. Post-rock, progressive metal, and experimental rock acts will find the most immediate application, though the raw character translates well to unconventional pop and indie contexts where authentic drum texture matters more than pristine separation.
The streamlined master section balances accessibility with deeper customization, allowing quick tonal adjustments without diving into microphone channel architecture. For engineers accustomed to mixing real kits or working with multitrack drum sessions, the granular control will feel intuitive rather than overwhelming. Midi mapping support arrives shortly, further expanding workflow integration.
