About this plugin
Refraction stands as a sophisticated spectral processing tool that reimagines sustained piano tones through harmonic manipulation and time-stretching. Rather than serving as a traditional piano library, it functions as a performance-responsive effects engine that captures and transforms the resonant properties of a premium upright piano recording.
The plugin's technical foundation rests on a tuned filter bank that analyzes held notes and stretches their harmonic content across time, allowing sustained tones to bloom and evolve independently of the original attack. This approach generates evolving pad textures and hybrid acoustic-electronic soundscapes from pure piano source material. The engine maintains harmonic coherence while permitting substantial spectral reshaping, making it particularly effective for ambient composition, film scoring, and experimental sound design.

Sonora Cinematic's attention to source material distinguishes Refraction from comparable tools. The underlying piano was captured using a considered microphone array - Coles ribbon mics for warmth, KM 84 condensers for detail, Chandler omnis for depth, and an AEA room ribbon for ambience. An additional signal derived from worn tape echo adds character without dominating the sound. This multi-microphone approach provides substantial tonal flexibility within the plugin's mixer section.
Refraction appeals to sound designers and composers seeking to bridge acoustic realism with granular synthesis capabilities. Unlike tools that layer multiple processing stages, it operates from a unified harmonic model, producing coherent results across wide parameter ranges. Its learning curve remains moderate for engineers familiar with spectral tools, though the intuitive parameter set accommodates immediate creative exploration. Among contemporary piano-derived processors, Refraction occupies distinctive territory - neither a sample library nor a conventional effects plugin, but a specialized instrument for evolving harmonic textures.
