About this plugin
The Oxford Drum Gate 2 upgrade represents a meaningful evolution in selective drum processing, building on its predecessor's foundation with three substantial technical improvements. The revised classification model delivers noticeably improved hit detection across kick, snare, tom and hi-hat sources, handling inconsistent playing dynamics and varied mic placement with better accuracy than the original.
The addition of an intelligent phase alignment engine addresses a genuine workflow pain point in multitrack drum recording. Rather than applying blanket time corrections that introduce phase artifacts, Drum Gate 2 uses adaptive algorithms inspired by Sonnox's Claro resonance detection to align tracks while preserving transient integrity. Automatic track grouping and visual feedback streamline what typically demands manual experimentation with third-party tools.

The new Adaptive Resonant Decay algorithm constitutes the most significant sonic change. Where Drum Gate 1 applied straightforward gating, this iteration separates resonant decay from surrounding spill using frequency-aware processing. Independent controls over gain reduction, decay time, high-frequency damping, and resonant region filtering grant genuine mixing flexibility. For engineers seeking transparent gating without the artificial quality of standard gates, this represents tangible progress. A Standard mode preserves the original character for those preferring familiar sonic behavior.
External sidechain support adds practical flexibility for situations where direct drum micing proves problematic or when triggering from existing MIDI arrangements. This upgrade suits serious tracking engineers and mix professionals working with multitrack acoustic recordings. The improvements justify consideration if you regularly wrestle with phase coherence or seek more musical decay shaping than conventional gating offers.
