About this plugin
Oxford Drum Gate 2 is a plugin designed to solve genuine problems in multitrack drum recording. It combines intelligent drum detection with phase alignment and decay processing into a single tool that addresses the core challenge of maintaining clarity and coherence across multiple microphone sources.
The classification model significantly improves upon its predecessor, delivering more reliable identification of kick, snare, tom, and hi-hat hits across varied playing techniques and recording conditions. This accuracy forms the foundation for everything else the plugin accomplishes. What sets Drum Gate 2 apart from conventional gating tools is its handling of resonant decay through an Adaptive Resonant Decay algorithm derived from Sonnox's Claro technology. Rather than crude gating, it isolates drum resonance from surrounding spill while preserving transient integrity, with granular controls for decay, high-frequency damping, and frequency shaping.

The Align tab addresses a persistent pain point: phase coherence between close and distant mics, top and bottom snare recordings, or overheads and room captures. Its intelligent algorithm applies time and polarity corrections without introducing the timing artifacts that plague generic alignment tools. Automatic track grouping and visual feedback streamline the workflow considerably.
External sidechain support, accepting both audio and MIDI, extends functionality for sessions with pre-existing beat triggers or when parallel processing demands necessitate external control sources.
This plugin serves serious mix engineers working with acoustic drums who value precision without compromise. For multitrack drum sessions where phase management and gate accuracy matter, Drum Gate 2 represents a meaningful step forward from both its predecessor and the broader category of general-purpose gating solutions.
