About this plugin
Equator2 represents ROLI's evolved software interpretation of their Seaboard hardware's MPE capabilities, and the Expressive Virtuoso expansion delivers a focused set of 40 presets that demonstrate the plugin's nuanced approach to hybrid orchestration. Rather than pursuing photorealistic sample libraries, these sounds leverage Equator2's synthesis engine to create responsive, performance-oriented instruments that reward expressive playing across the X, Y, and Z axes.
The preset collection emphasizes brass, woodwinds, and bowed instruments rendered through a distinctly synthetic lens. This approach yields instruments with extended dynamic range and articulation depth that acoustic sampling struggles to capture. Each preset exhibits carefully tuned modulation routings, pitch-bend sensitivity, and pressure response characteristics that prioritize playability over static sound design.

Equator2's strength lies in its low-latency architecture and polyphonic aftertouch handling, making it particularly suited for producers working with MPE controllers or exploring unconventional performance techniques on standard keyboards through third-party tools. The Expressive Virtuoso expansion serves those seeking immediate, production-ready timbres for scoring, ambient composition, and experimental music rather than requiring extensive parameter editing.
Within the broader landscape of MPE synths and expressive plugins, Equator2 occupies a practical middle ground. It lacks the raw sonic aggression of specialized synthesizers but exceeds the limitations of traditional sample-based instruments in terms of real-time responsiveness. For engineers integrating MPE workflows into existing DAWs, this expansion provides substantive creative tools without demanding extensive learning curves.
