About this plugin
Cypher2 represents a significant leap forward in cross-modulation synthesis, building substantially on the original Cypher's foundation. This upgrade delivers a refined approach to FM synthesis with thru-zero linear behavior across three oscillators, allowing for harmonically complex timbres while maintaining pitch stability - a critical distinction that separates this implementation from cheaper alternatives. The oscillator architecture supports multiple modulation vectors: FM, hard sync, and ring modulation can be layered and routed independently to one of two filter channels, enabling sound design approaches that move beyond traditional subtractive synthesis.
The dual-filter topology here is particularly noteworthy. Rather than a single processing path, Cypher2 offers five analogue circuit models in each filter bank, each derived from classic hardware synthesizers, plus a digital comb filter option. This plurality of filter characters gives experienced designers genuine choices rather than incremental variations on a single topology. The inclusion of waveshaping and resonance control alongside traditional filter parameters provides additional harmonic manipulation without reaching into separate utility plugins.

Cypher2 is best suited for producers and sound designers working in electronic music, film scoring, and experimental audio where timbral nuance justifies deeper exploration. While the interface can feel dense initially, the modulation depth and cross-patching flexibility reward study. Among contemporary soft synths, Cypher2 occupies middle ground between approachable instruments and deep-dive workstations - suitable for both focused sound design sessions and integrated workflow production. For existing ROLI Studio owners, the upgrade path offers meaningful expansion without requiring a full repurchase, though the investment demands commitment to exploiting its advanced capabilities.
